WIEDEN
This is your gateway to Weerribben-Wieden National Park. A magical landscape full of peace, heritage, and nature. It is the largest peat bog in Northwest Europe, home to the otter and the rare large copper butterfly, and includes the fortified town of Steenwijk, the water village of Giethoorn, and the former trading towns along the old Zuiderzee.
During the penultimate Ice Age, the landscape took shape. Water found its way through the rolling terrain and left behind a unique peatland. The discovery of peat as a fuel source brought peat cutters to the area. They dug out the peat, creating the characteristic pattern of narrow lakes (weren) and strips of land (ribben), intersected by canals and waterways. The reed cutters, still active today, keep this landscape alive and help preserve its natural balance.
